Some months ago I wrote and told you all about my favourite pub back home in Waterford, which has been sadly closed for quite a few years, and I expressed a dim hope that it might reopen some day (you can read that piece here https://germythen.com/2020/03/11/tee-haitches-a-legendary-pub/) Imagine my delight a few weeks ago to see on Facebook that they are back in business. For the moment can only serve food and drinks in their outdoor seating area, presumably the interior is not conducive to hosting patrons as yet, or maybe it’s just not practical with the social distancing restrictions that are in place. In any case, it’s great to see that the good people of the Urbs Intacta* can now enjoy a pint and a feed from T & H’s.
The only thing that disappoints me about it is that they have finally reopened in the ONE year that we couldn’t travel back. But hopefully by the time we do get back (God knows when that’ll be) they’ll be fully back in operation – in which case I might chance my arm and ask them for a gig. The last time I played in there was late February 1994, the night before I left for Australia. (that’s nearly 27 years ago now!!)
If you’re in Waterford, or if you find yourself there on a nice day, do pop down George’s Street and have a pint there – or two or three if you like ๐
*Throughout the medieval period, Waterford was Ireland’s second city after Dublin. In the 15th century Waterford was besieged twice by pretenders to the English throne. Both sieges were repelled and as a result, King Henry VII gave the city the motto that it retains to this day: Urbs Intacta Manet Waterfordia (Waterford remains the untaken city). It’s also the only city besieged by Oliver Cromwell that he failed to take.
